SYDNEY, N.S. — Hockey Canada recently announced novice hockey games will now be played half-ice for the 2019-20 season.

The change was introduced last year, however, this year half-ice games for the novice division is mandatory.

According to Hockey Canada, the half-ice games help with the development of novice-aged players.

“We’re tremendously excited to see players across the country experience the benefits of half-ice novice hockey,” said Tom Renney, chief executive officer of Hockey Canada.

“The focus is about making hockey more fun for these kids. They get more puck touches, more scoring chances, and ultimately, they have more fun.”

Hockey Canada says half-ice hockey has proven to provide kids more puck-touches, more passing and better development in tight spaces.
