Former NHL forward and one-time Halifax Mooseheads head coach Danny Grant has died following a battle with cancer, RDS reported on Tuesday.

The Fredericton native was 74.

Grant coached the Mooseheads during the 1997-98 season and posted a 24-41-5 record before he was reassigned to a chief scout position with the QMJHL team.

He also coached in the Atlantic university ranks with UNB and St. Thomas.

Grant played 14 seasons in the NHL, won a Stanley Cup with the Montreal Canadiens in 1968 and the Calder Memorial Trophy as the league's top rookie with the Minnesota North Stars in 1968-69.

He also played with the Detroit Red Wings - where he scored 50 goals during the 1974-75 season - and the Los Angeles Kings.

Grant finished with 263 goals and 535 points in 736 career NHL games.
