Fishing season is drawing near and April 1 will be upon us before we know it.
If you look around Atlantic Canada, you will find that there are many outdoor shows and boat shows being offered. Here is a great opportunity to spend a day learning what is new in the industry, seeing firsthand what other people enjoy from the outdoors as well as all the good work non-profit organizations are doing. I also know that many of the shows have a teaching component where you can sit in and learn about our great sport. Google outdoor shows and boat shows in Atlantic Canada and you will find several over the next two months.
I have dropped into a few of the tackle stores along the south shore and they are ramping up as well for the new season. The shelves are being re-stocked with a new supply of baits, new flies, rods, reels and everything you will need to get ready for the new fishing season.
Check out all the stores in your area that sells fishing tackle. Evaluate them on what they have to offer. I break the tackle stores into two categories. First are the smart stores, which are those stores that have staff who fish, know fishing and help you by answering all your questions. The second category are those stores that just sell tackle. Both have merits and you have to decide how you will benefit from both. If you are just starting out, the smart stores will be your best bet. They will help you get started with gear based on your budget and interests
