The Annapolis Royal Golf and Country Club opened on Feb. 29 and other clubs in Nova Scotia are thinking of following suit. However, Kempshed says that’s not a possibility at White Point.
“We have a clay based soil so it takes our course a little longer to dry out where other courses… they’re sand based so they dry out faster,” he says.
Last year the course didn’t open until early May due to the harsh, long lasting winter of 2015. The course was damaged during that winter but it has been repaired since then.
“I’ve walked the golf course before Christmas, the course looked fine,” says Kempshed. “Last year was a bad year opening for us, we lost half our greens due to the winter and this year our greens all look good so it’s a bonus.”
Kempshed says the warm weather puts golf on people’s minds so it’s likely White Point will have people asking about earlier start dates.
“They get what I call the fever and once the golf fever hits it stays until you get out there, they’ll start asking questions for sure,” he says.
