SHELBURNE, N.S. — The Shelburne County Fish & Game Association (SCFGA) will be holding their annual fishing derby on June 1 at Alvin Lake near Exit 27 on Highway 103.
The fun gets underway at 9 a.m. Alvin Lake is stocked by Nova Scotia Fisheries with speckled trout prior to the derby so the chances of hooking a catch are pretty good. Anglers have the option of casting their lines from the shore, or bringing a small boat or canoe to fish from. All boating and safety regulations apply.
No fishing licence is needed where it is the annual free fishing weekend in Nova Scotia. There will be prizes and draws during the derby. For anglers 16 and under, a $50 prize will be awarded for the first fish caught, and a rod and reel awarded for the biggest fish landed. For those 12 and under, there will be a prize for the funniest hat. There will also be a barbecue on site.
The fishing derby attracts upwards of 150 participants each year. There is a limit of five fish per person.
