It was a fairly predictable outcome Saturday night in Moncton.
The stacked Wildcats had little trouble against the rebuilding Halifax Mooseheads, beating them 8-0 in front of 5,616 fans at the Avenir Centre.
"We need a consistent effort and we didn't get it," said Halifax head coach J.J. Daigneault. "Everybody understood the situation and everybody knows our top players that got us through some tough times earlier in the season are somewhere else. But we still have have a job to do.
"We have to win one-on-one battles, block shots and be a second-effort hockey team."
It was reasonably close early on, with the Wildcats building a modest 1-0 lead in the first period. But four straight goals in the second period quickly changed the tenor and removed any doubt who was going to win.
Moncton added three more goals in the third period to turn it into a rout.
"There's the skill factor but there's also the work factor," Daigneault said. "You can give anybody (a game) if you go out there with a good work mindset. I don't think we did that tonight. We didn't play a good road game.
"A lot of one-on-one battles lost. You can say whatever you want (like) they have more skill than us but if you don't show up and work you don't give yourself a chance."
Tristan De Jong, Christian Huntley, Jakob Pelletier, Philippe Daoust, Axel Andersson, Jeremy McKenna, Elliot Desnoyers and Gabriel Fortier had the goals for the Wildcats, who are now on a four-game winning streak.
Dakota Lund-Cornish made 26 saves to earn the shutout for Moncton and Alexis Gravel and Cole McLaren combined to stop 39 shots for Halifax. McLaren replaced Gravel after the Wildcats made it 5-0 13:56 into the second period.
"It's a tough one for (the goalies)," Daigneault said. "When a team's outshooting you 45-25, it's very taxing for your goaltending."
Justin Barron, Said Abi-Faycal, Gavin Hart, Keegan Hunt and Samuel Dube did not play for Halifax.
The Mooseheads play their next game on Wednesday on the road against the Bathurst Titan.
Eagles 4, Olympiques 1: In Sydney, Mathias Laferriere scored twice in the win for Cape Breton.
Shawn Element added his 30th of the season and Tyler Hinam's empty-netter was his 20th. Mathieu Bizier had the Gatineau goal.
William Grimard turned aside 29 shots for the Eagles and Remi Poirier finished with 31 saves for the Olympiques.
The win was the Eagles' fourth in a row and 11th in their past 12 games.
