The Shelburne Schooners will open their season in the Nova Scotia Intermediate Baseball League Sunday, June 2, at home on Sherose Island with a doubleheader against the Truro Bearcats.

The Schooners have a few new, younger players joining the roster this season, said veteran player Stefan Newell, who is also the team’s manager this year. Trevor Swaine is the team’s coach.

There have been some changes in the league roster as well. Both the Hantsport Shamrocks and Kennetcook Braves have dropped out. The Pictou County Albions have returned after a leave of absence. New to the league are the Amherst Athletics. Rounding out the seven-team league are the defending champion Windsor Knights, the Noel Road Jays, the Pictou County Royals, the Schooners and the Bearcats.

Newell said the team had a good season last year, finishing second in the league for the regular season and in the league playoffs, and posting a 1-2 record in the provincial AAA championships.

The Schooners will play a 24-game regular-season schedule, including five doubleheaders at home in June. On June 8 they will host the Amherst Athletics, June 9 the Pictou County Albions and June 23 the Windsor Knights. On June 30, in Clark’s Harbour, the Schooners are scheduled to take on the Pictou County Albions in memory of Matt Maxwell. All game starts are 1 and 3 p.m.

The Shelburne Schooners are sponsored by Island Traps and Sea Star Fisheries, Clark’s Harbour, and Smith & Watt, Barrington Passage.
