Defending champion Moncton teams open East Coast IceJam with wins

BEDFORD, N.S. — The Moncton Flyers broke open a close game with three goals in the final period to defeat the South Shore Mustangs 5-1 in major midget action at The Chronicle Herald East Coast IceJam Hockey Tournament on Wednesday.

Luke Woodworth staked the Mustangs to a 1 -0 lead with 11 seconds left in the first period, but the defending champions answered with a pair of goals in the second period. Brendan MacPhee evened the scoring and Alex Petrie, while short-handed, put the Flyers in the lead to stay.

Samuel Savoie added a pair of goals in the third period and Alexis Daniel made it 5-1 for Moncton, which returns to action on Thursday at 5 p.m. against the Halifax McDonalds. 

Central Impact 2, N.S. Midget Selects 1: Colin Murphy scored in overtime to lift the Newfoundland and Labrador team to a win over the Nova Scotia Minor Midget AAA League all-star team. Sean Baker added a goal for the Impact while Keir Jordan had the all-stars goal.

Weeks 4, TriPen 0: Lucas Canning scored a pair of goals and Marcus Pettipas posted the shutout for Weeks. Kiefer Avery and Riley MacKinnon also scored for Weeks.

Major bantam

Jack Martin scored twice as the defending champion Moncton Hawks downed the Bedford Barons 5-1 on Wednesday. Philippe Collette, Cam White and Justin Gendron added singles for Moncton. Luke Foster scored for Bedford.

New Glasgow 5, Dieppe 1: Lane Lochead and Reese Smith each had a goal and a pair of assists in the Wear Well Bombers win. Ben Wallace, Logan Crosby and Kayden Moulaison also scored for the Bombers while Jack O’Blenus replied for Dieppe.

Antigonish 7, Eastern 2: Tyler Peddle netted a hat trick as the Novas defeated the Express.  Rory Wood, Riley Sampson, Tully Grant and Kevin Walker rounded out the scoring for the Novas. James Wood and Owen MacPherson had the Express goals.

Central Attack 5, South Shore 4 (OT): Wil White scored the winner in overtime for the Prince Edward Island team. Cam Squires and Brett Arsenault each had a goal and two helpers for the  Attack while Brennan Murphy and Luke Coughlin had singles. Dylan Rafuse scored twice for the Lumberjacks while Brennan Coleman and Cohen Westlake also scored.

Valley 4, TriCom 2: Nolan Fowler tallied twice as Kings Mutual beat the Thunder. Cole Burbidge and Mitchel Brown also scored for the Valley team while Michael Strapp and  Landen Toole had singles for TriCom.

Prince County 1, TriPen 0: Matt Hackett scored in the second period and George Gallant had the shutout for the Warriors.

TASA 4, Kennebecasis Valley 2: Carter Graves scored a pair of second-period power-play goals to lead the Gulls over the Kings. Quinn Kennedy had the other two goals and Owen Phillips three assists for the Gulls. Jacob Kaine and Ian Dickie had the Kennebecasis’ markers.

St. John’s 2, The Rangers 1: David Fisher potted the winner in the third period for the Hitmen. Luke Power also scored for the Hitmen while Devon Francis had the marker for The Rangers.
