Calvin Smith: 2019 Yarmouth County Male Official of the Year, Sponsored by the Town of Yarmouth

Calvin is a familiar face around many gyms in the South West Nova area. He started refereeing basketball in 1974! He has been at it for 45 years and is showing no signs of giving up anytime soon. His love of basketball and knowledge has given him the reputation as being one of the best referees we have in the area. He travels regularly for basketball games from Lockeport to Weymouth. Calvin has been officiating in many Provincial Tournaments as well, including High School Boys Division 2, Division 3, and Division 4. He also has done games at the High School Girls Division 3 level.

Calvin rarely turns games down. He can be seen refereeing any level of game, from minor basketball, junior high, up to the high school level. He loves to see the game of basketball grow locally as well. Calvin and his brother Chuck have ran basketball camps in Yarmouth for over 40 years! In September – October 2019, they ran a Basketball camp in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut for 10 days.

Calvin’s extensive knowledge of basketball goes back to his strong playing days with Saint Mary’s University from 1974 to 1978, playing for the Nova Scotia Agriculture College in 1981 and then playing in Intermediate Men’s leagues and provincials from 1978 to 1995.

Megan d’Entremont: 2019 Yarmouth County Female Youth Athlete of the Year. Sponsored by Tim Hortons

Megan has always been passionate about sports. She plays soccer, basketball, badminton and volleyball. Megan joined soccer skills at the age of 4 and was hooked on being part of a team ever since! She began playing competitive badminton at the age of 12. At a provincial level, Megan won gold in 2017 and silver in 2019 playing in the Girls Doubles division.

Megan is also a strong basketball player, beginning at the age of 12. She always is a leader on the floor. All though she plays a variety of sports, Megan’s biggest passion is playing volleyball. At the age of 11, she joined the Southwest Fusion Volleyball club and developed many friendships along the way.

In 2016, Megan and her team won Gold at Nova Scotia Tier 1 Provincials. In 2017, she was lucky enough to attend the U14 National Championships in Halifax, where her team won Silver in Tier 2 competition. In 2018, Megan went up an age group and played U16 and won Bronze at Tier 1 Provincials. That year was special for Megan as she was honored to win Silver at Tier 1 Provincials and was chosen Most Valuable Player!

Megan also attended the Elite Development volleyball camp in July 2018 at Acadia University. The attendance in this camp is by “invite only”. Megan also played volleyball for Par-en-Bas and in 2018, won Silver at Provincials in West Kings. This year, Megan’s team won the Volleyfest tournament in Senior High Female B Tier 1 championships in St.John’s, Newfoundland.

Megan was also named Ecole Secondaire de Par-en-Bas’ Female Athlete of the Year for 2018-2019, her Grade 10 year. Megan’s time is mostly spent at practices, games or watching other teams and cheering them on. Megan has made lasting friendships during these years and can’t wait to make more. She has a goal to play volleyball at the University level.

Blake Newell: 2019 Yarmouth County Male Youth Athlete of the Year, Sponsored by Tim Hortons

Blake started the 2018-19 hockey season as a member of the Yarmouth Peewee A Mariners. He earned the role of team captain very quickly, largely due to his leadership skills. He took his role very seriously and led the team for the entire season. Blake scored an amazing 61 goals and had 24 assists in 47 games played. That’s an average of 1.8 points per game! In the final game of the season, Blake and his team played Pictou for the Provincial title and once again he led the way with 5 goals and 2 assists! The score ended 9-2 and he and his team were now Nova Scotia Provincial Champions!

Blake’s success didn’t end there with a provincial hockey title. It was now time to shift gears to summer and to baseball. Blake was a member of the Yarmouth Peewee AAA Gateways. In May, he tried out for the Nova Scotia Provincial U13 Baseball team. He was selected and participated in the U13 National Championships in Repentigny, Quebec in August 2019. On that team, Blake played important positions of pitcher and infielder. He ended the tournament with a batting average of .429. Once back from Nationals, the Gateways played for the Provincial title, finishing in second place. Blake’s team had secured a spot to play in the Baseball Canada 13U Atlantics in Dartmouth, from September 12-15, with their second place finish. The Gateways rolled through the tournament, making it to the finals and eventually won the Atlantic championship. Blake had a stellar performance on the mound, hit very well and played good defense.

Blake continued with his hockey that fall and decided to play at a higher level and tried out for the Major Bantam team in Liverpool. It is very rare that a player coming from “A” level hockey makes the jump to Major Bantam, but once again Blake proved he could do it and be successful!

Blake has accomplished all of this at the young age of 12! It will be great to see what the future holds for Blake in years to come.

Tina Comeau: 2019 Yarmouth County Female Sport Volunteer Award, Sponsored by Tusket Sales & Service

Tina started out her “hockey career” as a hockey mom, when her children Jacob and Justin became involved in the sport. Throughout the past 12 years she has given back to the sport as a team manager, having volunteered with teams at the Atom A, Peewee A, Peewee AAA, Bantam A, Bantam AAA and high school levels. As a team manager her volunteer efforts have assisted and impacted hundreds of players and their families, in addition to volunteer coaching staffs.

She has helped teams through various means, including communication with families, organizing fundraisers, creating schedules, booking ice times for games and practices, handling game schedules, selling 50/50 tickets, booking hotels, working out travel arrangements, taking game photos, updating social media, and much more. This is a huge commitment, given that hockey seasons tend to run for seven months.

She has also helped to contribute to the local economy through her involvement with helping to organize and run the annual High School Cook’s Cup tournament (now the Pleasant Supplies Timber Cup tournament), as well as NSSAF/High School and minor hockey provincial and regional tournaments and all-star events.

She also volunteers as the webmaster for both the Yarmouth County Minor Hockey Association and the Valley High School Hockey League. Although she no longer has children playing hockey, Tina continues to volunteer her time as team manager of the Yarmouth Vikings High school team, a team she has been involved with for seven years.

Adam Churchill: 2019 Yarmouth County Male Sport Volunteer Award, Sponsored by Tusket Sales & Service

Adam’s connection to sport began back in 1999 when he began time keeping for the Yarmouth County Minor Hockey Association (YCMHA). He also started coaching hockey for YCMHA in 2003 and has coached at various levels over the years. He continues to be involved today and also has joined the YCMHA Board of Directors.

Adam coached the Yarmouth High School Boys team for 4 years from 2011 to 2015 and then went back to coaching minor hockey and has been coaching ever since. He re-joined the board at that time as a Timbits Director and as of last year, he has taken on the role as the ice scheduler for YCMHA. He now acts as YCMHA’s referee assigner, treasurer and communications officer.

Adam has been involved with scheduling the referees and timekeepers for minor hockey since 2003 and continues to do so today! He truly is a tremendous volunteer and is very deserving of the Sport Volunteer Award.

Andrea coaches the Par-en-Bas Volleyball Girls’ team and has won many tournaments over the last few years. She has won the Par-en-Bas tournament 2 years in a row, Drumlin Heights tournament 2 years in a row, won District Championships, Silver at Regionals and has hopes to win Districts & Regionals again this season. She also coaches with the South West Fusion Volleyball Club and the U14 Girls Team. Andrea is a coach as well as a coordinator, as she continues to run the Annual Fusion FunRaiser to kick off the volleyball season with the volleyball club. She has implemented and runs the yearly Fusion Classic and the annual skills camp for new volleyball players. She is a very busy contributing member of the South West Fusion Volleyball Club board and is responsible for annual registration. Andrea had been an assistant coach for 2 seasons with Fusion before becoming a head coach. She coached the Junior Boys at Par-en-Bas for 2 seasons, winning Districts and a Silver at Regionals. She also coached soccer with the Argyle Minor Soccer Club for 5 seasons, winning the end of season tournament once.

She has also been an assistant coach for 2 years with the Yarmouth County Minor Hockey Association, winning the end of the season tournament in her second season. She was also a trainer and a manager with various hockey teams over the years. She also had a role with the Par-en-Bas Curling team as manager, winning Regionals in their second season.

Andrea is a wonderful volunteer and coach and is there to help any team in any way that she can. She is a big supporter of fair play, giving players who have never played before the opportunity to learn the skills to play various sports. She is also a great and well-respected coach, taking the time to take the courses that are needed to be a coach and stepping up to offer her services when teams are in need of a coach. Her family is very supportive to her, as she spends many hours and days away from home.

Marcel Doucette: 2019 Yarmouth County Male Fair Play Award, Sponsored by the Municipality of the District of District of Argyle

Marcel helped lead the Yarmouth GPK Refrigeration PeeWee A Mariners squad to win a Provincial Title for the 2018-2019 season. He was a big part of the team’s success. This was the first team from the Yarmouth County Minor Hockey Association to ever win a PeeWee A Provincial Championship! They captured the Provincial banner with a 9-2 victory over the North Conference champions Pictou County Crushers. Marcel is a terrific coach and acknowledges his assistant coaches Greg Cottreau and Christian Deveau for all their hard work over the season.

In addition to claiming the provincial title, the GPK Refrigeration Mariners ended the season with an overall record of 41-6-2, taking home 3 other banners in the process (Fall Classic Tournament, Joe Lamontagne Tournament, and the Hockey NS South Conference Championship).

The highly successful season was in a large part due to Marcel's ability to bring the best out of his players and to develop their skills both as individuals and as a team. Marcel's leadership helped the team not only improve as a team on the ice, but also as a group of young men off the ice.

Marcel was positive yet constructive and all the kids loved to step on the ice with him. His energy was reciprocated by the kids and without his leadership, the season would not have ended in the same way. The team had lots of tough match ups and he believed in them so much that the kids stepped their game up to make him proud.

Leah Muise: 2019 Yarmouth County Female Coach of the Year, Sponsored by the Municipality of the District of Yarmouth

Leah started her coaching career with the Senior Girls fast pitch team at École Sainte-Anne-du-Ruisseau (SAR) while she completed her teaching practicum during the Spring of 2000. In her second year of her education degree, she continued with coaching the team and was very successful. This is where Leah started building her love for coaching.

In September 2001, she began her teaching career at Barrington Municipal High School. During her first year, she coached the Junior Girls fast pitch team, winning both Districts and Regional Championships. In 2003, she began coaching the Barrington Senior Girls fastpitch team and did so over a span of 10 years. The team won many District and Regional banners over the years, with Leah as their Head Coach. Soon, Fast pitch was having fewer schools participating in the sport, as softball was transforming more towards Slo Pitch. Barrington High soon became the last school in the Southwestern Region playing fastpitch softball. With no one left to play in the region, the school stopped putting a team in the NSSAF league.

Leah then shifted geared into Slo Pitch and decided to help with coaching duties with the Barrington High Senior Boys team, a job she took for the next three seasons. In her last year of coaching the team, they won the Provincial banner!

More recently, Leah has been involved with coaching and organizing baseball in the Municipality of Argyle. Leah’s son was interested in playing baseball and there were no local clubs for his age group. She helped start a baseball school program in Tusket. This program was very well received, and the players learned new skills, made friends and most importantly, had fun! This past summer, she continued with the baseball school and the numbers grew up to 19 players.

Leah is glad to have contributed to her community and is thankful so many community members have helped her along the way. Baseball is always a popular summer sport for children, and she is doing her part to help keep it alive.

She started playing goalie full time in Peewee. She played for the Yarmouth Female Bantam A Mariners, even though she was only second year Peewee. The Female Bantam A Mariners, in their inaugural season, were the 2011-2012 South Conference League Champions and went on to win Silver at the Nova Scotia Provincial Championships. In 2019 Lindsey transferred to Holland College to take Primary Care Paramedicine and decides to strap on the pads once again and try out for the Holland College Women’s Hockey team where she is currently the starting goalie. After the two-year break form hockey, Lindsey is very happy to be back on the ice playing for the Hurricanes.

In addition to hockey Lindsey also played soccer for both YCMHS Varsity team for 4 years and the Yarmouth Clippers soccer club. She was a female singles player for the YCHMS Badminton team and plays softball as well.
