As the first half of the season draws to a close for the Valley High School Hockey League, the top of both the boys’ and girls’ rankings are crowded.
In the girls’ league, the Avon View Avalanche are leading with 10 points; the Horton Lady Griffins are close behind with 8 points. Northeast Kings Titans and Bridgetown Trojans are tied for third with six points each and the Barrington Barons are at the bottom of the league with no points.
“I am really happy with how they have been playing despite not having any practice time due to the rink situation in West Hants; it's tough to go over things that need to be addressed,” Avalanche head coach Jeff Burgess said Dec. 9. “That said if we play as a team we hope to continue our success in the new year.”
On the boys’ side, the Titans are dominating the league with 14 points. The Avalanche, West Kings Wolverines and Yarmouth Vikings are all tied for second with 10 points each. The Digby Mariners are currently third in the league with nine points. The Middleton Monarchs are at the bottom of the league with zero points.
“One thing people underestimate is the calibre of the league and the quality of players. Each team has some outstanding players and every night is a challenge to win hockey games,” said Monarchs
coach Terry Saunders, head coach.
Despite being at the bottom of the pack, Saunders is optimistic.
“It takes time to build and implement systems,” he said. “Hopefully, we'll accomplish this in the new year and look to move up in the standings.”
