DEBERT, N.S. — Adam Ogilvie will soon be hoisting the heavy objects at a field in France.

The Debert man has been invited to compete in the Highland Games Bressuire.

“I was completely shocked when I got an email from the Margaree Highland Games asking me to be their athletic ambassador this year,” he said. “It hasn’t quite sunk in yet. I’ve competed throughout Canada and the U.S., but this is my first one in Europe.”

Ogilvie had thought his first event of the season would be July 1, but he received the message on May 26 about the June 15 and 16 competition.

“We haven’t had the best spring for practice so I had to put a push on to get some throws in,” he said. “I’ve been out in the rain and cold trying to get ready.”

Ogilvie first got involved in heavy games in 2003, when he stopped by a tent during a competition and picked up a couple of implements. He knew right away he wanted to get involved in the games, and began competing in 2005. He also helps organize events, including the heavy competition, at the Colchester Highland Games.

He now competes in Masters events, for those age 40 and over.

While in France, he’ll be staying with a host family.

He has friends who’ve taken part in the Bressuire games and he’s been to France for work, so he knows a lot about what to expect.

“I’m definitely nervous but I’m excited,” he said. “This is the trip of a lifetime.”
