The Dalhousie Tigers keep rolling through their Atlantic university men’s basketball opponents.
On Saturday, the visiting Saint Mary’s Huskies were outmatched by the Tigers. Dal outscored SMU 21-6 in the first quarter and then cruised to a 93-53 rout at Dalplex.
All 12 Dal players saw floor time, each playing at least 11 minutes in the game. Eleven Tigers had at least one basket.
“We are a deep team,” said Dal fifth-year forward Sascha Kappos, who was named player of the game. “And with games like this, it’s good to give guys some exposure and get experience to what it will be like down the stretch and come playoff time.”
Keevan Veinot topped the Tigers with 17 points while Kappos had 14 points and five rebounds in 21 minutes of action.
Dalhousie, the first team to clinch a berth in the AUS Final 6 tournament, improves to 13-1. In their last 22 regular-season games, the Tigers are 21-1.
Johneil Johnson, Dontae Mitchell and Qyemah Gibson answered with 11 points for the Huskies (5-8).
X-Men 85, Panthers 76: At Charlottetown, Avan Nava tallied 20 points and Azaro Roker had 13 points and 14 rebounds as St. Francis Xavier earned a road win over UPEI.
Reds 77, Axemen 75 (OT): At Wolfville, Markus Masters’ jump shot with 25 seconds remaining in overtime snapped a 75-all deadlock and led UNB over Acadia.
Capers 64, Sea-Hawks 58: At St. John’s, N.L., Osman Omar’s 13 points were enough to pace Cape Breton past host Memorial.
On Sunday, the Sea-Hawks came back to beat the Capers 82-69. Cole Long scored 26 points and had 13 rebounds for MUN. Omar answered with 20 points.
In AUS women’s hoops:
Sea-Hawks 74, Capers 58: At St. John's, AUS scoring leader Haille Nickerson netted a game-high 32 points and grabbed nine rebounds as Memorial bounced back to beat Cape Breton on Sunday.
In their Saturday evening matchup, CBU started the fourth on a 10-1 and outscored MUN 26-18 in the quarter to pull off a 68-65 victory.
Monique Calliste collected a game-high 20 points to lead the Capers. Nickerson paced the Sea-Hawks with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Axewomen 67, Reds 51: At Wolfville, Rachel Clouatre-Trudeau scored 16 points and Haley McDonald and Jayda Veinot each had 11 in Acadia’s win over UNB.
Panthers 61, X-Women 39: At Charlottetown, UPEI went on a 21-0 run in the first quarter and cruised to a lopsided victory over St. F.X.
Jenna Mae Ellsworth had 21 points for the Panthers, equaling Marley Bonnick’s total for the X-Women. Bonnick accounted for 54 per cent of X’s scoring.
Huskies 69, Tigers 59: At Dalplex, Alaina McMillan netted 18 points as SMU defeated Dal.
Chelsea Slawter-Wright and Chloe Wilson each tallied 15 points for the Tigers.
HOCKEY
Mitchell Balmas, the nation’s leading scorer, notched his second goal of the game, 3:59 into overtime as Saint Mary’s slipped past UPEI in Charlottetown on Saturday night.
Balmas, who also had an assist in the game, tops all scorers with 42 points in his first season with SMU.
Dawson Theede also tallied twice and Stephen Johnson added three assists for the Huskies.
Kameron Kielly answered with two goals and an assist for the Panthers.
Reds 6, X-Men 2: At Fredericton, Tyler Boland potted a pair of goals to keep pace with Balmas in UNB’s win over St. F.X.
Boland is second in U Sports scoring with 41 points.
Aigles Bleus 6, Tigers 1: At Moncton, Alexis Roy’s hat trick help lead Moncton over Dal.
In AUS women’s hockey:
X-Women 3, Huskies 1: At Antigonish, Tyra Meropoulis, who’s tops in U Sports scoring with 33 points, scored two goals in the third period as St. F.X. edged SMU.
Reds 3, Tigers 2: At Halifax Forum, Fabiana Petricca turned aside 38 shots in a losing cause as Dal dropped a close one to UNB.
UNB continued its winning ways on the road Sunday with a 1-0 triumph over UPEI in Charlottetown.
Aigles Bleues 2, Mounties 1: At Sackville, N.B., Audrey Berthiaume stopped 26 shots as Moncton trimmed Mount Allison.
On Sunday, the St. Thomas Tommies visited Mount A and blanked the Mounties 4-0.
VOLLEYBALL
Victoria Haworth had 10 kills and three aces as the U Sports No. 1 Dalhousie Tigers swept the Memorial Sea-Hawks 25-15, 25-17, 25-10 on Saturday.
Julie Moore added six kills for the Tigers, who improved to 15-0.
Reds 3, Axewomen 0: Adora Rooyakkers collected 11 kills and 18 digs as UNB swept past Acadia 3-0 in Fredericton. Scores were 25-20, 25-22, 25-23.
Huskies 3, Aigles Bleues 1: At Moncton, Anna Watt led Saint Mary's with a dozen kills and 11 digs in a 14-25, 25-19, 25-21, 25-14 victory on Sunday afternoon.
