CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — The beat goes on for Red Dirt Boomer as the sophomore pacing colt made it eight wins in a row during Atlantic Breeders Crown Championship Sunday at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park.
Driven by trainer Gilles Barrieau in the $20,000 three-year-old pacing colt final, Red Dirt Boomer established himself on the front early and scored a three-length win in 1:56.4 over a track listed with a one-second variant. Purple Poet (driven by Kenny Arsenault) rallied for second while Red Dirt Rocknroll (David Dowling) took a two-hole ride to finish third. Daniel Ross of Belfast holds the ownership papers of Red Dirt Boomer.
Woodmere Oleksiak returned to her winning ways in the $20,000 three-year-old pacing filly final with Dowling supplying the 1:58 steer for trainer Earl Watts and owners Debbie Denney, Ric McNutt, Hollis Newson and Windemere Farms.
Emilys Angel (Arsenault) drew in off the also-eligible list to finish second and Cheeky Cherry (Walter Cheverie) completed the healthy $418 trifecta ticket.
The Cornwall-based Chris Davies stable dominated the $20,000 two-year-old pacing colt final, taking the top three spots in the championship race. Windemere Ryan took a pocket ride to win the event in 2:00 for driver Walter Cheverie and owner High Five Racing of Stanhope. The Big Chase (Corey MacPherson) was second and Mr Kelly (Adam Merner) finished third for the Davies trifecta.
A tough first-over journey gave Woodmere Skyroller a place in the record books as she was crowned champion in the $20,000 two-year-old pacing filly final with a 1:58.4 trip for driver MacPherson, trainer Kevin MacLean and owner Reg MacPherson of Stratford. Na Naa Said So (Redmond Doucet) finished a quarter-length back in second while Woodmere Nasha (Arsenault) came from off-the-pace to finish third.
Tequila Tuesday prevailed in the two-year-old Erwin Andrew Memorial Trot final, sponsored by Meridian Farms and the P.E.I. Harness Racing Industry Association, in a front-end score of 2:03.1 for driver Myles Heffernan Sr., trainer Myles Heffernan Jr., and owner Jackie Heffernan of Summerville. The $9,000 final had Mabou Ridge (driven by Clare MacDonald) finish second and Go With Her (Kuri White) was third.
Continues win streak
Gettin Messi continued his win streak in the $9,000 three-year-old trot final – Louis McIsaac Memorial – as Mike McGuigan sailed the son of Armbro Barrister to the front and never looked back en route to a nine-length score in 1:59.1. Gettin Messi is owned by Jamie Whalen of Avondale and Len McGuigan handles the training duties.
Thelastonestanding (Brian MacPhee) finished second with Richsnortherndream (Arsenault) rounded out the triactor.
In aged competition, driver Marc Campbell scored a triple from his own stable and a quadruple as a driver to sweep all the events. Freddie won the $3,000 Open Trot in 1:59.4 from the Campbell stable while stablemate Rose Run Quest won the $6,000 Invitational Pace in 1:56.2.
Jordie Hope hit the line first in the $4,000 Fillies and Mares Open Pace in a 1:57.3 mile for driver Campbell and trainer Brian Ladner of Charlottetown. Campbell's other win was with Jetster in a 1:57.1 mile in a $2,100 overnight class from his stable.
