BARRINGTON, N.S. – Hundreds of runners are expected to be at the start line for the 48th Nova Scotia Marathon and Half Marathon on Sunday, July 22.

A 10k run was also recently added to the event, which is being hosted by the Municipality of Barrington.

More than 200 runners had already signed up as of July 5, representing seven Canadian provinces and 11 U.S. states, said race director Anna Kenney.

“We have them from Nova Scotia to the Yukon and from Maine to California.”

Kenney said registration is on par with previous years.

“It’s the last several weeks that we get most of our registrations. Last year we had 333 runners so I’m hoping to reach that or surpass it.”

Onsite registration will start on July 21 at the Barrington Municipal Recreation Centre on Sherose Island from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and again Sunday morning from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. Start time is 8 a.m. The marathon, which begins at the Sandy Wickens Memorial Arena on Sherose Island, has a new finish line this year. Instead of ending on the Barrington Passage side of the Cape Sable Island Causeway, the finish line will be up around the corner on Highway 3 in Barrington Passage by T.L. Swaine Garage Ltd. The course has been adjusted at The Hawk on Cape Sable Island, where the majority of the route is located.

Race organizers have also added a 5k run for July 21 starting at 4 p.m. on Sherose Island.

Also, on July 21 at the arena from 6 to 8 p.m. is a spaghetti supper being hosted by Barrington Passage Sobeys for the runners and their families.

Following the marathon, half marathon and 10k will be two banquets at the arena; one at 11 a.m. for the 10k runners, and the second at 12:30 p.m. for the marathoners and half marathoners.

Kenney said volunteers are always welcome to help during race weekend.

“Anybody that wants to volunteer can call us. We can definitely find them something to do.”
