WESTCHESTER, N.S. – A 25-year-old Enfield woman was killed Friday evening following a snowmobile crash on Sutherland’s Lake in Cumberland County.

RCMP said in a news release that the unidentified woman died near the scene after being thrown from the snowmobile, while adult male passenger was also thrown from the same vehicle but was not injured.

The incident occurred at approximately 6:20 p.m. and the initial investigation indicates the snowmobile struck a piece of land on the lake. Visibility was poor due to snow and white-out conditions.

The investigation is ongoing.

Police have not released the name of the woman.

Justin Rushton, chief of the Westchester Fire Department, said it was a tough call to respond to.

“The conditions were not the best and it was on the far side of the lake,” Rushton told the Amherst News. “It’s such an unfortunate situation considering how old she was. It’s very sad.”

Sutherland’s Lake is very popular with snowmobilers and numerous camps are located around it. The lake is near the top of Westchester Mountain and is not far from the Cobequid Pass toll plaza.
