THREE MILE PLAINS, N.S. — Firefighters hit the ground running in the yard of Matt’s Towing Tuesday.

“We had a large volume of fire,” said Jason Cochrane, Brooklyn’s fire chief.

Multiple departments were dispatched to the scene located at the 200 block of Mountain Road in Three Mile Plains shortly after 6 p.m.

It didn’t take long for the flames to fan to multiple vehicles in the salvage yard, metal storage containers and some nearby structures, Cochrane said.

“Two or three vehicles were on fire and it had spread to a neighbouring property bordering the yard, to a large garage.”

The mix of automotive parts, tires and accelerants on the scene all contributed to the intensity of the blaze, Cochrane said.

“It very quickly spread.”

Livestock was removed from the neighbouring barn that caught fire, the chief added.

He said a garage was completely destroyed and the barn was extensively damaged.

EHS paramedics were on scene as a precaution, but there were no reported injuries.

Cochrane said the high elevation of the hydrant system presented some challenges during the fire suppression efforts.

“Our water supply was very hit or miss,” he said, adding that they had to call in more tankers to get enough water to the scene.

Departments spanning from Mount Uniacke to New Minas provided support.

The response wrapped up around 11 p.m.

“There were several other structures there that were at risk but, thankfully, the firefighting saved those,” Cochrane said.

The cause was deemed accidental.
