NEW HARRIS SETTLEMENT, N.S. — One person is dead following a single vehicle accident on the Seal Island side of Kelly’s Mountain on Saturday.

Victoria County RCMP were called to the scene at about 9:20 p.m. after a vehicle towing a trailer left the road, rolled and caught fire.

Police say the driver died at the scene and that the only passenger was transported to hospital for treatment of what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.

The Trans Canada Highway, Route 105, was closed following the incident and early this morning was expected to be opened to one-way traffic.

RCMP and Cape Breton Traffic Services were still on the scene early today as an analyst investigated the accident.

The incident was the second in less than 48 hours on the windy stretch of road between the top of Kelly’s Mountain and the Seal Island Bridge.

On Thursday evening, a driver and passenger escaped with minor injuries after a tractor-trailer overturned on a sharp turn. The RCMP say a preliminary investigation has determined the west-bound vehicle rolled on its side after its load shifted on the turn.
