SYDNEY — The Mi’kmaw Chiefs of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland have removed Morley Googoo as regional chief.
The organization held a special meeting Friday, which was called in response to events that have occurred during Googoo’s suspension from his role with the Assembly of First Nations (AFN). At this special meeting, it was collectively decided to remove Googoo as the regional chief at the AFN.
In a news release, the Nova Scotia and Newfoundland Chiefs indicated they continue to support AFN’s ongoing investigation into Googoo and, until a new regional chief is selected, the chiefs of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland will work with AFN to ensure their region is represented and informed.
The chiefs indicated they will not comment further at this time.
The Assembly of First Nations served Googoo a notice of suspension earlier this year in response to a report that he engaged in ongoing discrimination against members of the Nova Scotia Native Women's Association and other Mi’kmaq women.
