LITTLE BRAS D'OR, N.S. — With changing leaves comes the return of an annual event that brings together a community.

The St. Joseph Parish fall fair, organized the Bras d’Or Catholic Women’s League, has been a mainstay in Little Bras d’Or for over half a century.

A highlight of the festival’s first day on Wednesday is a roast turkey dinner that draws over 800 customers.

On Thursday, the fair continues with special events held just for children.

And just how many turkeys does that translate to?

Twenty-five, says Bras d’Or CWL president Jane McNeil.

“It’s probably the only time that we have everybody chipping in,” said McNeil. “It’s all volunteers — old, young … it’s probably about the only thing we have that the whole community is involved in.”

Roast turkey dinners

  • COST: $14
  • TIME: 4-6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25
  • EAT-IN: Bras d’Or Hall - 24 Villa Dr.
  • (including a craft & flea market; along with bingo at 7 p.m.)
  • TAKE-OUT: Bras d’Or Seniors & Pensioners, 66 Main Street
  • SERVED: 800 meals on average

As part of the fall fair, two options are available for hungry patrons.

The popular turkey dinners are available for eat-in at the Bras d’Or hall on Villa Drive or take-out at the Bras d’Or Senior and Pensioners Club on Main Street.

All meals are handed out first-come, first-serve.

McNeil said the event services parishioners at the main St. Joseph’s and mission churches of St. Anne’s Parish in Alder Point and St. Joachim’s Parish in Boularderie.

“People come from everywhere to help,” said McNeil, who said she’s been involved in the fair for about 12 years.

“We get together Tuesday night and do all the vegetables, there’s usually about 50 people there roughly and then the next day we have lots of help.”

Current members of the CWL in Bras d’Or say they’re not actually sure when the first fall fair was held but know it’s a tradition that’s been going on for over 50 years.

As part of Thursday’s activities, a children’s fair will be held at 3 p.m. featuring fish pond, hot dogs and games.

During the eat-in event on Wednesday, there will also be a craft and flea market featuring local vendors.

At 7 p.m. Wednesday, the Bras d’Or hall will play host to a game of bingo.
