Dartmouth man charged with robbing same bank twice

DARTMOUTH, N.S. — A Dartmouth man has been charged with robbing the same bank twice in less than a week.

Peter Guy Joseph Monteith, 43, is accused of holding up the Scotiabank branch at 91 Portland St. in Dartmouth on Oct. 9 and Oct. 15.

Monteith  was apprehended in Dartmouth on Friday after a warrant was issued for his arrest.

He’s charged with two counts each of robbery and wearing a mask in the commission of an indictable offence, as well as one count of possession of a weapon, a knife, for a dangerous purpose.

Monteith made a brief appearance in Dartmouth provincial court Monday.

Prosecutor Michelle MacDonald said the Crown was opposed to Monteith’s release.

He was not ready to seek bail so Judge Jean Whalen remanded him to the Central Nova Scoitia Correctional Facility in Dartmouth until his next court appearance Nov. 25.

Halifax Regional Police responded to a robbery at the bank Oct. 9 at about 10:15 a.m.  A man had jumped the counter and taken cash from a teller before fleeing on foot.

At about 1:20 p.m.  on October 15, a man entered the bank and told a teller that he had a knife. The culprit fled the bank on foot with an undisclosed sum of money.

A convicted robber, Monteith has had a number of outbursts in court over the years.

In 2005, he threw both of his shoes at a Calgary judge after being denied bail.

In 2009, he threw a shoe at a prosecutor, hitting him in the back of the head, during an Appeal Court hearing in New Brunswick.

During a robbery trial in November 2010, Monteith was dragged out of court kicking and screaming while in leg shackles and handcuffs.

The next month, he escaped from sheriff’s officers while being escorted to a van.

In 2011, Monteith was charged with assault after throwing a copy of the Criminal Code across a courtroom at a judge in Moncton, N.B.
