New Glasgow’s Aleta Williams is one of five people who will be inducted into the new Atlantic Journalism Hall of Fame later this month.
Williams, who passed away on April 4, will be honoured posthumously for her 40 years as a journalist with The Evening News in New Glasgow and as the first African Nova Scotian woman to work in the province's mainstream journalism industry.
The Hall of Fame will be officially launched at the Atlantic Journalism Awards gala dinner and awards show on April 28, at the Halifax Marriott Harbourfront Hotel.
“As a journalist, she knew her community,” said Dave Glenen, regional editor for Nova Scotia for Saltwire Network. “As we chased the fires, the mayors, the crime, she sought out the ordinary and drew out their stories. While most hoped not to be a target of some of our stories, all celebrated being in one of Aleta’s. It was common to hear on the weekends, people talking about the latest Aleta feature.”
