The power was turned off in south-end Halifax and roads closed as officials dealt with an emergency situation Monday evening.

A Nova Scotia Power spokesman said the utility cut power to a transmission tower on Harbourview Drive as per a request from Halifax Fire and Emergency at about 8 p.m.

As a result, 19,000 people in a large swath of the peninsula were without power at one point. Power was restored at about 9 p.m.

Earlier in the evening, a Chronicle Herald photojournalist saw a person on top of the tower. Photos taken at the scene were not published due to the sensitivity of the situation.

In a news release at 10 p.m., Halifax Regional Police said the incident had concluded and roads were reopened.

"Due to the nature of the call and privacy reasons, we are unable to provide additional details. There was never any risk to the public. We would like to thank the public for their patience and understanding."
