WEST PUBNICO, N.S. — When Roger d’Entremont saw a reporter struggling to fly a kite carrying a GoPro during the Acadian Village kite flying festival a few years ago, he immediately offered to help.
Despite their many efforts the kite wouldn’t fly, but the incident was a good example of the former executive director’s caring nature.
D’Entremont retired on April 1 (the same day as his birthday), after working 12 years at the Acadian Village (or, as it’s officially known in French, Le Village Historique Acadien de la Nouvelle-Écosse).
Many expressed their appreciation of d’Entremont’s work and personality after he announced his departure on social media. A farewell event was held March 30 at the legion hall in West Pubnico.
“It was overwhelming, really,” he said, adding he will miss the people at Le Village.
“We were like a family there. We had so many good times and laughter. It makes it so much fun to go to work where people like their jobs,” he said.
“I love my work at Le Village, but there’s a certain time in your life when you know you have to move onto the next chapter. I’ll keep busy doing something but I’m not sure what right now,” said the 65-year-old.
He says his plans include a trip to Newfoundland and some power-boating along the Maine coastline with a group of others.
He’ll also be spending some time golfing.
He says he’s very grateful that his job helped him to know people not just by their name, but to know them as a person.
“Now I know the character of the people… and they treated me so well.”
Prior to his position at the Acadian Village, d’Entremont worked for close to 30 years at Maritime Tel & Tel.
The new executive director is Richard Larin, from Richibucto, New Brunswick. A graduate from l’Université de Moncton in business administration, he has acquired over 30 years of experience in economic development with various departments and agencies.
Larin says he’s excited about this new challenge and living and working in the Pubnico-Yarmouth area.
He’s also looking forward to celebrating the Acadian Village’s 20th anniversary this year, with special events to be announced at a later date.
