Firefighters are on scene at a landfill fire in the Municipality of Chester this morning.

At 6:45 a.m., Kaizer Meadow Waste Management Facility staff arrived at work and discovered a fire and called 911, the municipality said in a news release.

Fire departments from Chester, Chester Basin, New Ross, Hantsport, Lunenburg and Windsor are on scene.

An aerial apparatus from Brooklyn Fire Department has been called.

“Smoke is diminishing as the fire is being managed with water and is under control,” the release said.

“The landfill is closed, but waste collection is proceeding as scheduled.”

The cause of the fire is unknown.

This isn’t the first fire at the Kaizer Meadow Waste Management Facility.

Last July, firefighters from across Annapolis Valley and the South Shore battled a stubborn blaze of unknown origin in the farthest reach of a dump cell.

The fire was roughly 100 metres long Everett Hiltz, chief of the Chester Volunteer Fire Department, said at the time.
