LIVERPOOL – A number of topics were reviewed during a recent Queens Community Health Board meeting.
The Queens Community Health Board (QCHB) held the business portion of its annual meeting at the Trinity Anglican Church Hall in Liverpool on June 11.
Summit
Barbara Ross, chairwoman of the board, said the QCHB has been asked to complete an application for a summit showcase. From discussions at past meetings, Ross said the board has decided to apply to showcase its cannabis forum.
Ross said board members are hoping to be approved to deliver a short presentation about, in part, why the QCHB decided to focus on cannabis as one of its priorities.
Big Brothers Big Sisters
Another item concerned Big Brothers Big Sisters, which received a wellness grant.
“Unfortunately, for staffing reasons, they’ve been unable to use their grant money,” said Ross.
Ross said the request is that the board asks Big Brothers Big Sisters to return its grant money. She said that would mean getting approval from board members. Ross emphasized a situation like this doesn’t happen often.
“But in view of the circumstances, I think this is probably going to be the only option we’re going to have,” Ross said.
A vote to ask Big Brothers Big Sisters to return the grant money was unanimous.
Stakeholder meetings
Ross discussed three recent community stakeholder meetings – one in Liverpool, Bridgewater and Chester.
She said the meeting in Liverpool was well attended, with about 30 people present.
The data that was collected from the meetings are being analyzed. Ross said the board would continue to work on its four health priorities.
“Our goal is to look for two recommendations per health priority,” said Ross.
Nominations
Ross was nominated chairwoman, Raddall was nominated vice-chair and Sue Beaumont-Rudderham was nominated as secretary. There were no other nominations for the QCHB’s executive.
Council update
Heather Kelly, councillor of District 2, was at the meeting. She said she didn’t have much to report, but there has been recent movement with transportation and the Queens County Transit Society. Gilbert Johnson, councillor of District 7, spoke about that. Johnson said he was reporting on news from a meeting that took place two weeks ago.
“Just this past week, we were able to secure the funding from the provincial government for phase three and four, which is pre-pilot and pilot funding to the tune of 30 some thousand dollars with support from the region (of Queens Municipality) for 25 per cent of that,” he said.
Johnson said the group’s plan is to have a pilot project in place by September or October.
