Dr. Elizabeth Cromwell C.M. was recognized and honoured at the Municipal Proclamation Launch of African Heritage Month at the Black Loyalist Heritage Centre in Birchtown on Feb. 4 for her investiture into the Order of Canada on Nov. 20, 2018.
“If I could use one word to describe Elizabeth, it would be inspiring,” said Penny Smith, Warden for the Municipality of Shelburne. “For more than 20 years she has been tireless and determined to see her dream and this beautiful centre become a reality and has not allowed anyone or anything to stop her from telling the story that is now being told to the world, so congratulations Dr. Cromwell for this much deserved honour.”
Cromwell was presented with a plaque from the five municipal units in Shelburne County in recognition of the Order of Canada Investiture and her tireless dedication. She was also presented with a a letter of congratulations on behalf of the province from Tony Ince, Minister of African Nova Scotia Affairs.
Cromwell is a founding member of the Black Loyalist Heritage Society (BLHS). She has also been recognized with an honorary degree from Dalhousie University Doctor of Laws (honoris causa).
Cromwell is only the second person from Shelburne County to be invested into the Order of Canada. The first was the late Marion Robertson in 1993.
