A look back at a year with the Queens County libraries

By Eric Pottie

This week, I want to write about the library, but not in the usual way. Rather than talk about our programs, materials, or policies, I want to talk about the library retrospectively as last week marked my one-year anniversary as the manager of the Thomas H. Raddall and Alean Freeman Libraries.

I want to thank everyone who has made this year amazing. Troy, the chief executive officer, who gave me the opportunity. All the staff at both libraries: David, Sheena, Tina, Shelley, Holly in Liverpool and Charity in Greenfield. Thank you for your hard work and effort. You’ve made it very easy and fun to come into work each day.

When I accepted and then started working here I was anxious. I had only left school three weeks earlier and would be running two branches in my home community.

I was really wondering what I had gotten myself into and worried I had bitten off more than I could chew.

Fortunately, these fears were quickly put aside as the community welcomed me in.

It has been a great year, from meeting different people, to attending events and festivals, or just simply walking down the street and saying hello. This has been a very open place.

But most importantly, I want to acknowledge and thank our patrons - the regulars who come in and make conversations and also the people that come in once in a blue moon when they need to print something. The kids who come full of energy every week to our after-school programs and the people who sit quietly and read.

The library gets all kinds of people, and I thank you all for your patronage and for making the library the best it can be. And to those that have yet to discover the library, I want to encourage you to come in and see what we have to offer. You may find a special book or event suited to you or one that sparks a new interest. We’re all part of the same community and even if you haven’t been using our services, we’re still here and our door is open to everyone.

So thank you all for a great year. I look forward to this upcoming one.
