SYDNEY RIVER, N.S. — Atlantic Superstores five Cape Breton locations have been collecting non-perishable food items as well as cash donations to help community members in need since Nov. 24.

All food and cash donations made locally will stay in each community, with each store sponsoring a local food bank.

In Cape Breton, Sydney River Atlantic Superstore is supporting CAW Louisbourg and Loaves and Fishes; Glace Bay Atlantic Superstore is supporting the Glace Bay Food Bank Society; North Sydney Atlantic Superstore is supporting the North Sydney Community Food Bank and the Sydney Mines Food Bank Society; Colbourne’s No Frills in Sydney is supporting St. Theresa’s and the Salvation Army Sydney Community Church; and Port Hawkesbury Atlantic Superstore is supporting the Port Hawkesbury Food Bank Society and the Port Hood Food Bank.

Ann Marion Willis, a registered dietitian at three Sydney-area Atlantic Superstore locations, says that most-needed items are the same ones that you fill your cart with each week.

“Think about the healthy pantry staples that you stock up each week on to feed your own family — wholegrain cereals, hearty soups, canned fish such as tuna and salmon, pasta and pasta sauces, canned vegetables and fruits. Baby foods are also much needed,” said Willis.

Last year, during the holiday food drive, Atlantic Superstore locations across Nova Scotia collected $170,000 and thousands of pounds of non-perishable food to local food banks across the province.
