Swimmers participated in a swim-a-thon, which is the team’s main fundraising event.

Natalie McMaster, the Milton Dambusters’ team manager, said swimmers went door-to-door collecting pledges. She said the club also approached local businesses as part of the fundraising initiative. The event raised more than $4,000.

Many of the children and teens made personal goals for themselves as well.

Evelyn Smith, Ava Smith, Abigail Smith and Emma Labour, swimmers with the Milton Dambusters, all took part in the swim-a-thon.

“It’s tiring, but it is fun because we have a big potluck after it,” said 11-year-old Ava.

Ava completed 120 laps during the hour-long event. Seven-year-old Evelyn made a goal of 40 laps and ended up swimming 60.

Evelyn and Emma said they like to swim on the team because they get to learn new swimming strokes. Ava said she likes being able to make friends of all ages.

“You get to freshen up every night and swim,” said Abigail, with a big smile.
