KINGSTON, NS - The Barrington Barons proved their softball prowess, earning top spot in both girls and boys Western Region Division 3 Softball tournaments held in Kingston and Bridgetown respectively May 25 and 26.

While the Middleton boys played in the consolation, the Middleton girls went right to the final against Barrington but lost 13-3 when the mercy rule was applied and the game ended.

Girls Play

But the Middleton girls will be headed to provincials based on their second-place performance.

The Bonny Hubley coached team had a good tournament, picking up an 18-7 win in their first outing Friday against New Germany, a 13-9 loss to Shelburne in their second game, and a 22-14 game over Par-en-Bas early Saturday morning. That was good for the No. 2 spot in Pool 1 and a semi final against Saint Mary’s Bay, winners in Pool 2.

Shelburne was first in Pool 1, defeating Pas-en-Bas 9-6, edging New Germany 14-13, and taking the 13-9 game over Middleton. That put them in the other semi final against Barrington, who were second place in Pool 2.

Barrington and Middleton won their semi finals and met in the final in a short game called by the 10-run rule and the banner for Barrington.

Girls provincials are slated for June 1-2 at Forest Heights Community School.

Boys Play

In Bridgetown, boys action saw Barrington go undefeated in pool play, edging Forest Heights 18-17, trouncing North Queens 18-0, and downing Bridgetown 20-7. In the other pool, Middleton blanked New Germany 10-0 at Bishop Park, lost a 12-5 game to SMBA, and defeated Drumlin 25-15 for a semi final against Barrington.

Barrington knocked out Middleton 12-2 for a trip to the championship game.

In the other semi final Forest Heights met SMBA by virtue of wins over Bridgetown (14-4) and North Queens (13-3). But SMBA took that semi final 14-2 for a slot in the banner contest against Barrington.

In the end, the Barons took the regional banner and heads to provincials. But Saint Mary’s Bay gets a spot at provincials as well.

The Bridgetown boys team didn’t picked up a win in the tournament as they defeated North Queens 20-4 in the event’s first contest on Friday.

Middleton played in the consolation game against Forest Heights, losing 17-1.

Boys provincials are June 1-2 at Richmond Academy.
