LIVERPOOL - Skating.
That’s what 12-year-old Lily Wile loves most about hockey, and she’ll soon get the chance to do just that on the Canada 150 rink on Parliament Hill.
Wile’s team, the Western Riptide Peewee A Green, was recently selected to go to Ottawa to represent Nova Scotia in the Canada 150 on the Hill tournament. The selection wasn’t random, though. Wile’s team made a video showing why it wanted to go to the tournament.
The contest closed Nov. 18, and players found out they’d won shortly after that.
How did she feel about that? Simple.
“Happy,” said Wile.
One of the things she’s most looking forward to doing on the trip is going to see an Ottawa Senators game. She’s scheduled to be in and around Ottawa from Dec. 27-31.
Sixteen female and 16 male teams, one of each from every province and territory, are guaranteed to play one game on Ottawa’s new outdoor rink on Parliament Hill. Teams are also guaranteed at least three games during the tournament. Each team is a peewee house league team.
In addition to a 30-second video, teams also had to submit a 250-word essay.
Wile started to play hockey when she was five years old because her mother, Amanda Gaudet, also played Canada’s sport. The forward is the assistant captain of her team, on which there are players from Hubbards to Liverpool.
“(I) help people if they need me,” said Wile about that role as assistant captain.
The Region of Queens Municipality, A-1 Pizza, Cook & Sons Financial Inc. and Home Hardware are providing some financial support to Wile for the trip.
Teams heading to Ottawa will receive:
• Round-trip travel for 11-17 rostered players and up to 5 team officials
• Accommodations from Dec. 27-30
• Transportation while in Ottawa-Gatineau
• A minimum of three tournament games with a minimum of one game on the Canada 150 rink
• Commemorative set of 150-Ottawa International Hockey Festival jerseys
