Third round leader David Williamson of Ashburn was five over on his final round at the par-71 Paragon Golf and Country Club, and was caught by 15-year-old Shaun Margeson of Oakfield Country Club who shot a 73.
Going into the final round, the 30-year-old Williamson held a three-stroke lead over Margeson, but the young golfer birdied the 17th hole and pulled into a tie for the lead heading into the 18th hole. Both bogied the 18th hole to force a playoff.
Margeson was in the woods on his tee shot, but chipped out and then chipped in for par. Williamson responded with an up-and-down birdie from the bunker and captured his second Nova Scotia Amateur. He first won in 2008.
“He was just awesome,” Williamson told The Courier soon after the playoff. “He’s going to have a brilliant future.”
Both golfers will represent Nova Scotia at the Canadian Men's Amateur championship at the Weston Lambton Golf Club in Toronto from Aug. 10-13.
A three-way playoff to decide the third place and alternate position on the Nova Scotia team was won by Oakfield's Geoff Campbell.
Last year’s junior Amateur champion Myles Creighton of Digby finished in 11th spot at the championship with rounds of 77-72-77-76 for a 302 total. Other Digby County golfers were Stephane LeBlanc (18th) and Anthony LeBlanc (34th), both from Clare, and Justin Wood (58th) of Digby.
