This was the third time in less than a year that fire has broken out on the ship, which is being cut up and scrapped by R.J. MacIsaac Ltd.
Liverpool Fire Chief Steven Parnell says Friday’s fire was caused by residual fuels in the bottom of the hull.
He said workers were cutting at the remains of the ship when the fire broke out.
The fire itself was quite spectacular. Thick black smoke could be seen coming from the remains of the ship for miles, and flames were also seen shooting from the scrapped vessel.
Parnell says the department used the aerial ladder truck to tackle the blaze.
A total of 49 firefighters from Liverpool, Port Medway, Greenfield, and Miill Village fought the fire.
The Protecteur was brought to Liverpool last April as part of a $39 million contract awarded to R.J. MacIsaac to recycle two retired navy vessels, the Procteaur and the Iriquois. Later, MacIsaac got a second contract to break up the Algonquin.
Those ships are sitting along the side of Port Mersey while the Protecteur is broken up. It is down to the very hull.
