Synchro skating championships almost here

LIVERPOOL - More than 450 skaters, parents, officials and friends are set to descend on Queens County for a unique event Jan. 27 and 28.
That’s when the Queens County Blades Skating Club is hosting the Atlantic Regional Synchronized Championships at Queens Place Emera Centre in Liverpool.
The event is scheduled to go from 12-5 p.m. Jan. 27 and from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Jan. 28. A cost of $5 covers the weekend.
Skaters will be coming from all over Atlantic Canada, including Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, explained Melissa Robinson, host chairwoman of the event. Skaters could range in age from five years old to adults.
“So it’s basically the top team in each of the qualifying categories, they advance on to the actual Skate Canada Synchronized Skating Championships,” said Robinson.
More than 50 volunteers have helped out so far, with more work to be done to help with the weekend-long event. Some volunteer duties have included fundraising and registration. During the event, volunteers will perform a number of other jobs as well.
“We’ve never had this type of sport in Queens County before,” said Robinson, emphasizing its uniqueness.
Robinson hopes that the visitors who come for the event will love Queens County so much that they return in the summer.
