Queens Region CAO Richard MacLellan said BMX track will feature a pump track, which is mounds of dirt that BMX bikes would go over.
“One is on a slope, so it’s a gentle hill for BMX bikes to go over, and then there’s a little area that people can practice on, and then there’s a three quarters of a kilometer trail, a BMX and mountain bike trail.”
MacLellan says the BMX component was a last minute add-on, but it made a lot of financial sense.
“We’ve also done a lot of consultation with youth following our community discussions on Queens Place Emera Centre about what sort of features they would like in the community and particularly in Queens Place, and we heard it was important to have more unstructured play opportunities, places to go do things that we don’t need to program, so we’re always looking at different ideas,” he says.
“So during the design phase of this the notion of adding some BMX because you can also ride your BMX in the skatepark, the notion of some other features came up, however we didn’t really understand in terms of space and layout what that would mean. And after we finished the design and ordered the contract to get the committed half a million dollar skatepark forward we took a look at this and found it was a really good feature for very little money,” he says.
“Basically we’re just moving the soil that we would have to move for the skatepark and the supplemental cost is limited to cutting the kilometer and a half of trail, so we’ve got an incremental cost of about $5,000 to achieve a feature that stand-alone would probably be a $20,000 project, because we’ve already got things mobilized there.”
The trail will go around Emera Centre and cut up by the Best Western, so it will be seen from Highway 103. It is being built now, in conjunction with the work on the skatepark.
MacLellan says it should attract more visitors to Queens.
