LIVERPOOL - Liverpool’s legion will once again host the long-standing annual New Year’s Day Levee.
When the calendar page turns to the New Year, people can begin 2018 by heading to the Legion Branch 038.
The annual event is free and set to take place in the auditorium from 1-3 p.m. There will be fish chowder and hot dogs, said Murray Crouse, the first vice-president of the Legion Branch 038 executive.
“It’s open to everybody,” he said.
The number of people that attend from year to year varies, said Crouse. There are usually between 180 and 200 people in attendance.
“The levee’s a tradition, really,” said Crouse. “It all goes back to units in the service.”
Crouse took part in the tradition when he was in the service and describes a levee as a get together with friends.
Crouse said the levee has been happening at the Liverpool legion for many years.
The legion gets financial support from the Region of Queens to help hold the event. This year, the legion requested support for half in the amount of $450. There was a unanimous vote on the recommendation at the regular council meeting Nov. 28 to kick in the funds.
