LIVERPOOL – On Feb. 17, area residents can enjoy a fun day of curling while raising funds for the Canadian Cancer Society.
Since 1987, the Liverpool Curling Club has been hosting the Curl for Cancer event, raising approximately $90,000 since its inception.
This year, the goal is to raise $6,000, says Meghan MacAdams, a volunteer with the Canadian Cancer Society, and one of the event coordinators.
When this fundraiser started in 1987, a few of the women who volunteered for the Cancer Society were also involved in curling, and it has subsequently become a tradition for the county, says MacAdams.
“The Liverpool Curling Club has continued to be very generous in their support of the Curl for Cancer,” she adds.
The event is also a great opportunity to try out a new sport, as no experience is needed to play, just a desire to have fun, she added.
“A good majority of people who sign up usually have curled very little, if at all,” says MacAdams. “It’s intended to be a day of fun, while raising money for the Canadian Cancer Society.”
During the Curl for Cancer event, there will be a raffle table set up with several great items and a 50/50 draw. The curling club itself will have a canteen open, offering great snacks, and their bar will be open as well, says MacAdams. Spectators are most definitely welcome.
This year's Curl for Cancer is being held on Feb. 17 at the Liverpool Curling Club, starting at 10 am. To register, contact MacAdams at 902-350-6065. The registration fee for a team is $20, which breaks down to $5 per player, which she says is not a hefty fee for a day of fun and supporting a great cause.
