Like all communities, the Town of Bridgewater is in a constant state of flux and evolution. Through our daily actions, we as citizens of this town make choices, create connections and contribute in a variety of ways to this shared space we call our home. This is the basis of community building. These practices and behaviours that many normalize have the potential to enhance social capital, network, our organization and collectively motivate us through a shared purpose.

Community is therefore about so much more than simply inhabiting a demographic location. It is a network of relations and of shared ideals, by a group of deeply intertwined people.

In light of this, one of the most important questions we need to ask ourselves, and our neighbours is: Do you feel like a part of your community?

Your feelings of integration will, without a doubt, shift over your lifetime and when this occurs, this is the time to find common ground with your neighbours. One of the most impactful ways to do so is look to the future. What kind of community are we creating for our kids and youth? What can we do to construct a safe, supportive, inclusive environment for our young people? How do we raise a pro-community generation?

Community building knows no age. Community starts on the soccer field with teamwork and hard work; at camp learning compromise and compassion; and in the music room blending creativity and comprehension.

Making opportunities in sport, recreation, musical and cultural activities accessible to all young members of our community is the mission of PRO Kids. PRO Kids is a community initiative committed to removing financial barriers to ensure kids and youth have the opportunity to participate in PRO (Positive Recreational Opportunities) activities. PRO Kids is a unique concept that was developed by the City of Thunder Bay in Ontario and is now implemented in many communities across Canada, including the Town of Bridgewater.

On Saturday, Aug. 25, the Town of Bridgewater and PRO Kids will be hosting a benefit concert in support and celebration of PRO Kids. The time of the concert is from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Shipyards Landing, 210 King St. Enjoy live music from Yesterday, The Bombadils and The Barrowdowns. There will also be games, food, a raffle and more. Entrance fees will be accepted on a “give what you can” basis with all proceeds going directly to PRO Kids.
