LIVERPOOL – Queens County will welcome people from all cultures at a celebration held as part of Liverpool’s Privateer Days.

For the fifth year in a row, the South Shore Multicultural Festival will be held in conjunction with Privateer Days on June 24 from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. along the Liverpool waterfront.

The event, says Anne Fownes, executive director of the South Shore Multicultural Association, is a celebration of the diversity within the community and is a fun-filled family day of music, dance, cultural and children's activities and food. Admission is free.

Throughout the day, there will be a variety of performers including the Nova Scotia Mass Choir, Oasis Belly Dancers, the Maritime Bihu Girls, the Chinese Arts and Culture Society, the Indian Festivals Club of Nova Scotia, South Shore Pipes and Drums, Julio Fernandez Dancers, Marcel Amores and Plan Ashe, Colin Talwar Choreography (Bollywood) and Women of the Shore.

Activities include a First Nations learn to drum and children’s crafts, henna for kids, an introduction to cricket, belly dancing for beginners, a photo booth, pour painting and much more.

Also, on site will be a craft and vendor tent selling multicultural food and wares. Organizers say there is currently space for more food and craft vendors and anyone interested can email  [email protected].

The South Shore Multicultural Association was formed in 2014 for the Lunenburg-Queens area, with the mandate to honour local heritage and embrace a culture of inclusion and diversity within our South Shore Communities, says Fownes.

Another goal was to partner with community groups to host festivals and events to celebrate diversity, which is what this one-day festival aims to do, she said.

“Multicultural festivals highlight cultural diversity and provide a warm social context in which to makes connections and friendships,” says Fownes. “Events like this foster social harmony and integration and build strong multicultural communities.”
