GREENFIELD – On June 16, the Greenfield Dragway will host its first-ever big rig show n' shine and drag races.

A big rig show and shine is basically a car show for the big trucks, giving the drivers and/or owners an opportunity to show off their big trucks, says Ricky Miller, president of the Nova Scotia Drag Racers Association and the Greenfield Dragway.

As for the drag races, Miller says it’s a heads-up event. This means that both trucks will start at the same time and the winner is the first one to cross the finish line. Spectators will be able to watch the truckers shifting gears and rolling coal down the quarter-mile, he says.

This event differs from the regular drag racing, he explains, which are bracket events. In these events, the vehicles don’t always start at the same time and they have dial-in times. But, for this event on June 16, they will.

The idea for the big rig races came from a few local people who were discussing it at Miller’s wife’s place of employment.

“They thought it would be a good idea and she brought the idea back to our directors and we decided to give it a try,” he says.

Admission is $10 for a day pass for an adult and children under 12 are free. Weekend passes are available for $15 for an adult. This event is open for the entire family. Food and beverages will be available for sale on site.

Any drivers who still want to participate can contact the Raceway at (902) 354-8046. There is an entrance fee of $20 per truck.

“We are looking forward to meeting with the truckers and to offer them a place to show their vehicles and or drag race them in a safe environment,” says Miller. “We are hoping that we see lots of spectators and participants.”
