A local timber framer has taken the freedom even further by building his tiny houses on wheels.
West Green Harbour builder Chris Bird recently built his wife Sheila a tiny kitchen to house the Finest Kind Food kitchen.
“It was a lot of fun to build,” said Bird. “It was a blast.
He wants to build more.
“There’s something romantic about going where you want easily,” says Bird. “It is also pretty weird seeing them drive down the road.”
The houses themselves might be tiny, but the movement around the world is huge.
“People like the philosophy behind them,” he says.
Bird says he has built many tiny houses but this was his first one that is mobile.
The house is entirely self-contained meaning it can be powered by propane and battery or a generator.
Bird has plans to make the house solar in the next few months.
He says during the two months it took to build it there were some challenges to overcome.
“I had to keep everything small and light, but strong” he says. “I had a great time figuring out the best way to build it.”
He says most buildings don’t have to move and so there was some outside of the box thinking to be done.
“I’ve done tiny timber frames and bunkhouses,” says Bird. “But somehow they don’t have the same allure as one on wheels.”
